A fisherman was happy when he thought he had caught a big fish while fishing in a local river in Thailand.

He was fishing in the Nan River in Phitsanulok when it turned out that the "fish" was actually the corpse of a 21-year-old girl who had been missing for days.

According to local news site Thaiger, Mueang Phitsanulok police officers were called to the scene at around 10.30am yesterday (Jan 2).

Medical experts and rescue workers attended the operation, but the body was found dead, lying face down on the ground.

She was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, with the fishing hook allegedly caught in her clothes, and was later identified as a 21-year-old student from Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University named Sunit.

The 58-year-old man who found the body was called Naret and was "shocked" when he found the body in the place where he regularly fishes.

Meanwhile, one of the woman's friends claims she went for drinks at a bar and returned to where they were staying in a "truck".

It has been claimed that she got out of the car - where she was with friends - and jumped off the bridge over the river in the middle of the journey.

They also state that her friends tried to wade down the river to find her, but were unsuccessful, and called the rescue services to help.

It is also reported that the woman's family will perform religious burial rites after the autopsy is performed, but that they do not suspect any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
