"Sucked" by plane engine, US airport baggage handler dies tragically

An American Airlines baggage handler tragically lost his life on Saturday.

He was swallowed by the engine of a plane at an airport in Alabama, foreign media write.

The horrific tragedy occurred at Montgomery Regional Airport around 3:00 p.m. The victim, who was not immediately identified, worked for Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the case.

"We are devastated by the accident involving a team member of Piedmont Airlines, a regional carrier of American Airlines, at Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM). Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and members of our local team. We are focused that everyone involved has the support they need during this difficult time." an American Airlines spokesman said.

According to Reuters, two sources briefed on the incident said the worker died after an incident involving one of the plane's engines was running.
