Three people have been jailed in Hong Kong for stealing art objects reportedly worth a total of $ 637 million. Among the looted objects were several letters written by former Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong.

The thieves had no idea what they had stolen nor its value and therefore sold it to an amateur collector for $ 25.

The buyer himself did not know the value of the calligraphy and cut it in half so that he could save it more easily.

For this reason, the authorities decided to sentence the defendants to two and a half years in prison each.

The handwritten letter contains details of a meeting of the Chinese Communist Party and some stanzas of Mao's poems. Its owner claims it is valued at around $ 300 million, though it is not known who estimated it.

The manuscript was stolen during a robbery in September 2020, when three men entered the home of Fu Chunxiao, a well-known collector of stamps and revolutionary art.
