Mitch McConnell

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell briefly froze and was unable to answer a question from a reporter at an event in Kentucky on Wednesday, weeks after experiencing a similar problem in Washington.

According to a video broadcast by a local news station, the 81-year-old McConnell was asked if he would run for re-election in 2026. The senator asked the reporter to repeat the question before stopping to speak for about 10 seconds.

A woman standing near Senator McConnell asked her if she heard the question, and she repeated it. When McConnell didn't respond, she informed the audience that they needed some time. McConnell later answered two additional questions, but not the question about his 2026 run. He appeared to have some difficulty speaking and walked slowly out of the room where the news conference was being held.

Senator McConnell's reaction was similar to an earlier incident when he froze for about 20 seconds at a press conference in the US Congress building in late July. He went back to his office with aides and then came back to answer more questions.
