Residents near Lake Lure in North Carolina have been asked to evacuate immediately due to the danger of the dam bursting.
Authorities in the country issued an emergency call a few minutes ago, asking residents to go to higher ground, as "the failure of the Lake Lure dam is imminent."
Since yesterday, the water level in the lake has reached a critical level, while discharges have been continuous, blocking a large part of the highway that passes below.
Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are facing major flooding from Hurricane Helen.
If the lake's 36-meter-high dam were to burst, it would be an event of catastrophic proportions for the area.
