President Joe Biden hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Thursday (September 26) for discussions regarding US support for Kiev's fight against the Russian occupier.

President Biden emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine will not be successful. "Ukraine will make it, and we will continue to stand by you every step of the way," said President Biden.

During a separate meeting with Mr. Zelenski, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's candidate for the White House, reiterated the US government's support for Kiev's efforts against Russian aggression, while stressing that it is up to Ukraine to decide how the war will end.

Without mentioning him by name, Ms. Harris criticized the Republican vice-presidential candidate, JD Vance, whose proposal to end the war would leave Ukraine with crippled territory and far from NATO membership.

"These proposals are the same as those of Putin. To be clear, they are not proposals for peace," Ms Harris said. "They are proposals to surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable".

In a recent interview, Republican Vance suggested that Ukraine and Russia stop fighting and create a demilitarized zone within the current battle lines. He said that Kiev would have to stick to a neutral status and give up its bid for NATO membership.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden announced a military aid package for Ukraine worth more than $8 billion on Thursday.

The American leader used President Zelenskiy's visit to demonstrate American support for Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression.

The military aid includes the first shipment of bombs of the "Joint Standoff Weapon" model with a range of up to 130 kilometers. The tip of this bomb is equipped with a laser beam guide or camera that sends data to a computer about the location of the target. After receiving the signal, the computer sends commands to the bomb which uses the mounted arms to move towards the target.

These medium-range bombs improve Ukraine's ability to strike Russian forces from a distance safer for Ukrainian troops. Bombing should be done by fighter jets.

A US official told the Reuters news agency that President Biden will not announce that Washington will allow Ukraine to use US bombs to strike targets deep in Russia.

Meanwhile, the Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump, said late Thursday that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. Former President Trump has criticized the Ukrainian leader during election campaign rallies, expressing doubts about Ukraine's ability to win its war with Russia./VOA
