The Leopard 2 heavy tank, which Ukraine has been seeking for months from Germany and the West, is a world-renowned weapon that is likely to have a significant impact on the battlefield.
– Numerous advantages –
Designed by the German manufacturer "Krauss-Maffei" and built in series from the late 1970s to replace the American tanks "M48 Patton" and then the tank "Leopard 1", "Leopard 2" combines firepower, mobility and protection.
This approximately 60-ton battle tank, of which approximately 3,500 have rolled off the production line, is equipped with a 120-millimeter cannon that allows it to engage the enemy on the move, thanks to its 1,500 horsepower. , up to 70 km/h, with a distance of 450 kilometers.
It is also equipped, according to the manufacturer, with effective integral passive protection against mines and missiles.
Its crew of four also benefits from technological means to locate and target the enemy at long range.
– Wide availability in Europe –
Another big advantage is that the "Leopard" is spread across the continent, thus facilitating access to ammunition and spare parts and simplifying maintenance, which is demanding for this type of equipment.
The last four models to this day are still in use, from the 2A4, of which Poland offers to deliver 14 pieces to Kiev, to the 2A7, which Berlin is unwilling to part with, preferring to keep it, like France with its "Leclerc" tank to ensure protection.
Finland, equipped with more than 200 of them, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), is also ready to equip the Ukrainian army.
According to the German press, a handful of other European countries, not named, would also be willing to participate in the effort.
Greece, with 350 tanks, and Turkey, which used them against Kurdish forces in northern Syria, are the countries with the most copies of the 2A4 model.
– Significant impact on the battlefield –
If Kiev could get 100 such tanks, the effect would be significant on the battlefield against the Russians, IISS estimates.
Equipped with "Leopard 2", an army can break enemy lines and end a long trench war, writes "Bild".
"With the Leopard, soldiers can advance several tens of kilometers at a time," the newspaper points out.
