A gunman has killed 10 people in Los Angeles (USA), near a place where the Chinese New Year celebrations had just ended.

The event happened on Saturday, at 22:22 local time, in Monterey Park, where about 60,000 people live.

Monterey Park is home to one of Los Angeles' largest Asian communities.

For the "Los Angeles Times", a witness said that she was in the bathroom of a disco when the shooting started: "When I came out, I saw someone with a gun in his hand and 3 bodies lying on the ground. One of them was the owner of the bar."

The police are looking for the person suspected of the incident and the authorities do not yet have information about the motives of this attack.

Ten other people were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, at least one of them is in critical condition.

Thousands of people attended the celebrations earlier in the day. The city of Monterey Park is located about 11 kilometers from the center of Los Angeles.
