Tears of despair shook the gynecology ward at Rome's Pertini hospital when the 30-year-old mother fell asleep while breastfeeding and the 3-day-old baby suffocated. The serious event happened at midnight on January 8.

Next to the mother was a nurse. She had the heavy burden on her shoulders to tell the mother the grave event, revealing to her the meaning of the change in skin color of the newborn son. The nurse told the mother that when she was sleeping she had crushed her son with her body without realizing it.

In Italy, investigations into the tragedy have begun, while charges of manslaughter have been filed. The mother is worried because the child should not have stayed in her arms but returned to the bed after feeding.

A child no more than 5 months old should not sleep next to the parent because a gesture of love often turns into a tragedy, as unfortunately happened at midnight on January 8. This is what happened that afternoon. The mother asked to be with her son, hold him, hug him and breastfeed him.

As she experienced moments of happiness, fatigue overcame her and she closed her eyes without realizing that the baby was under her. A few minutes later the nurse arrived and saw what he didn't want. Although he tried to give him first aid and bring him back to life, the event ended tragically.
