Appearing in Trump's video as a monkey, Barack Obama breaks his silence

Former US President Barack Obama has reacted to a racist video shared by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social network, in which he and his wife Michelle appeared as monkeys.

The video was part of a post with unfounded claims of rigging the 2020 election and was accompanied by the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The clip sparked strong reactions in the US, from both Democrats and Republicans.

Obama spoke on a podcast with Brian Tyler Cohen, where he was asked about the level of public debate in the country. Without mentioning President Donald Trump by name, he said that political discourse in the US "has descended to a level of cruelty that we have never seen before."

"It's important to understand that most Americans find this behavior deeply disturbing. It's true that it's attention-grabbing. It's true that it's a distraction," Obama said.

He added that "a clown show" is taking place on social media and television and that it seems as if the "shame" and "respect for duty" that once guided public officials has been lost.

"And what's true is that there doesn't seem to be any shame about it among people who used to think that you had to have some kind of etiquette and a sense of propriety and respect for duty, right? That's been lost," he said.

The video was met with criticism from senior Republicans, with Senator Tim Scott calling it "the most racist thing I've seen from this White House."

The White House initially called the reactions “fake outrage.” It later said the post was made by a staffer and the video was deleted. President Donald Trump told reporters that he “didn’t see” the part featuring the Obamas and that he “didn’t do anything wrong.”
