Rubio "calms" Europe

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a message of unity to Europeans on Saturday, declaring that Washington has no intention of abandoning the transatlantic alliance, but stressing that Europe's leaders have made a series of policy mistakes and must change course.

Rubio's general message of cooperation at the annual Munich Security Conference was relatively well received by European diplomats and security officials present at the meeting.

Although Rubio has occasionally poked fun at European policymakers, his speech stood in stark contrast to Vice President JD Vance's address to the same forum a year earlier. At the time, Vance argued that the greatest danger to the continent came from censorship and democratic backsliding within the EU itself, Reuters reports.

"At a time when newspaper headlines announce the end of the transatlantic era, let it be known and clear to all that this is neither our intention nor our desire, because for us Americans, home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe," Rubio told the crowd.

"We want an Alliance that stands boldly into the future. And the only fear we have is the fear of shame for not leaving our nations prouder, stronger and richer for our children. An Alliance ready to protect our peoples, to safeguard our interests and to defend the freedom of action that allows us to shape our own destiny," he said.
