US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has canceled at the last minute his participation in a key meeting with European leaders on Ukraine during the Munich Security Conference, justifying the decision with conflicts on the agenda.
According to the Financial Times, European officials have seen this move as a signal that Washington may be losing interest in close coordination with allies regarding the end of the war in Ukraine.
One European Union official called the decision "crazy," while another said the meeting lost weight and substance without the participation of the United States.
The cancellation comes at a time when European countries are seeking a clearer and more coordinated role with the US on security issues and potential peace negotiations in Ukraine.
On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron urged European leaders to reaffirm Europe's position on the global stage, making clear allusions to the United States' trade and foreign policy towards the continent.
Macron clearly stated that the EU must take the reins of the game into its own hands and no longer wait on partners across the ocean.
"If we want to be taken seriously on the European continent and beyond, we must show the world our unwavering commitment to protecting our interests. This starts, of course, with continued support for Ukraine, but it can also include lifting unfounded tariffs and politely rejecting unjust claims to European territories. That is what we have done and that is what we will continue to do."
The statement appears to be a response to tariff threats from the United States and US President Donald Trump's plans for Greenland.
The French president also underlined the importance of joint defense and security projects, warning that national solutions or favoring national providers could lead to "waste of time and money" and would be "a big mistake."
He stressed the importance of the SAFE (Strategic Autonomy Fund for Europe) mechanism to support the development of European defense industries:
"This is European money, and it will be used for European solutions and programs."
With this speech, Macron reaffirmed the goal of a more independent and united Europe in foreign policy and defense, emphasizing that strategic decisions should be made within the continent, and not depend exclusively on allies outside it.
