EU ready to punish Serbia for changes to justice law, 1.6 billion euros expected

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has said the European Union could halt €1.6 billion in loans and grants to Serbia after Belgrade passed laws that she said were eroding trust in its commitment to the rule of law.

"These changes are eroding trust. It is becoming more difficult for those in Brussels who are willing to make progress with Serbia to present their case," Kos told Reuters.

Kos said the commission was reviewing funding for Serbia under the EU's Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which aims to bring the region closer to EU rules and ultimately bring countries like Serbia into the bloc.

Serbia was allocated 1.6 billion euros in loans and grants under the program. Kos said these funds contain preconditions related to the rule of law.

Serbia began formal talks to join the EU in 2014, but widespread corruption and weak institutions have slowed progress.

The judicial reforms include limiting the term of chief public prosecutors and giving court presidents greater powers over judges. Critics fear the reforms will undermine the independence of judges and jeopardize high-level corruption cases overseen by the Public Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime.

The Serbian Ministry of Justice has said that the new laws will make the judiciary more efficient by improving the decision-making process.
