Terry Anderson, the former head of the Beirut bureau of the American news agency Associated Press (AP), has died at the age of 76.

Anderson died at his Greenwood Lake home in upstate New York after complications from heart surgery, the AP reported, citing his daughter Sulome.

He was held hostage by Islamic Jihad in Lebanon for 6 years from 1985 to 1991.

A former Marine, kidnapped after a tennis match, he had become one of the symbols of the dangers facing journalists and other Western citizens in Lebanon.

After his release, he wrote his memoirs Den of Lions, a bestseller chronicling his imprisonment. Anderson worked for the AP in the United States, Japan and South Africa before moving to Lebanon in 1982 to cover the Israeli occupation. He remained there as the country descended into chaos.
