The US tariff rate on Chinese imports will increase to 104% at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, a White House official confirmed to CNBC.
US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to increase existing tariffs on China by 50% on Wednesday if Beijing did not remove retaliatory duties on American goods by Tuesday.
On the same day, Trump said he specified that China faced a deadline of "12:00" to remove its tariffs.
Beijing vowed that it would not lift the 34% tariffs and that the Chinese are willing to continue the tariff "war".
