Trump said "shoot down Russian planes", provokes Russian ambassador to
Russian Ambassador to France, Alexey Meshkov

The potential shooting down of a Russian plane by NATO in allied airspace "would be war," said the Russian ambassador to France, Alexey Meshkov, in an interview with the RTL news channel published on September 25.

The comments come amid rising tensions between Moscow and NATO, as allies accused Russia of numerous airspace violations in recent weeks.

US President Donald Trump has said that NATO countries should shoot down Russian planes that violate their airspace, a statement welcomed by many eastern members.

When asked what Russia's reaction would be in such a case, Meshkov replied that shooting down a Russian plane would constitute war.

"You know, there are many NATO planes that violate Russian airspace, intentionally or not, but this happens quite often. They don't get shot down afterwards," the ambassador asserted, without giving an example.

Poland's air defenses shot down at least three Russian drones in its airspace on September 10, while another drone was recorded flying over Romania for almost an hour a few days later. On September 19, Estonia said three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for 12 minutes.

Meshkov denied the allegations, echoing previous statements from the Kremlin. Moscow has also denied any connection to suspicious drone sightings in Denmark and Norway earlier this week.

The recent incidents have further strained already tense relations between Russia and NATO countries, many of which have supported Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Recent months have seen Western leaders warn of a possible open conflict with Russia in the coming years after the war in Ukraine ends.
