Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has followed an unusual flight route on his trip to the United States, avoiding the airspace of several European countries, due to fears that he could be arrested under an international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Netanyahu departed Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening to attend the UN General Assembly in New York, where he is also expected to hold a meeting with US President Donald Trump.

According to data published by flight monitoring platforms such as FlightRadar24, the Israeli prime minister's plane chose a longer and more unusual route, flying across the Mediterranean Sea and through the Strait of Gibraltar, completely avoiding France and Spain, two member states of the International Criminal Court.

The flight briefly passed over the airspace of Greece and Italy, while the avoidance of other European countries appears to be related to the legal obligation of ICC member states to implement arrest warrants issued by this court.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office has not given an official reaction to the diversion, while French diplomatic sources have told the media that France had approved the plane's passage through its airspace. "In the end, they decided to follow another route and we don't know why," said a French diplomat.

According to the Jerusalem Post, several staff members and journalists were not allowed to travel with Netanyahu due to technical limitations and security issues.

However, it is suspected that the real reason was the need to reduce weight to accommodate the additional amount of fuel that the longer route required.

In July, during a previous trip to the US, Netanyahu had flown through Greece, Italy and France, while this time avoiding these countries comes after the ICC issued an arrest warrant in November last year for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Meanwhile, neither Israel nor the United States are members of the International Criminal Court.
