Three women, including a friend of Italy's prime minister, were killed when a man opened fire in a cafe in Rome, injuring four others. Those inside were meeting as part of a local block residents' committee.

A suspect, 57 years old, is in custody. He has a history of disagreements with some of the committee's board, writes the BBC. Of the injured people, who are believed to be two women and two men, one remains in serious condition.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni identified one of the women killed as her friend Nicoletta Golisano. The names of the other dead women are Elisabetta Silenzi and Sabina Sperandio. In a Facebook post sending condolences to Ms Golisano's family, Meloni said she would always remember her friend as "beautiful and happy".

"Nicoletta was a protective mother, a sincere and discreet friend, a strong and fragile woman at the same time. But above all she was a professional with an extraordinary sense of duty... Nikoletta was my friend. It is not right to die like this," Meloni wrote.

Meloni also said a shooting range from which he allegedly stole the gun used in the attack had been closed and was under investigation. The police have not yet commented on the suspect's motive, which has been mentioned by the Italian press, but not officially. The attack is not believed to have been political. Reports suggest that the suspect and the board of residents of the building have been at loggerheads for some time.

Giorgia Meloni, leader of Italy's far-right Brotherhood of Italy party, became the country's first female prime minister in October.
