A new discovery by British scientists raises hope for the existence of life beyond Earth. It is about the planet K2-18b, which is located about 120 light-years away and is three times larger than Earth.

K2-18b is located in the habitable zone of its star, meaning it could have temperatures suitable for the presence of liquid water, a key ingredient for life. According to a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, this planet could be a “Hycean” world, with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a watery surface.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers from the University of Cambridge have detected traces of the substances dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), molecules that on Earth are produced only by marine microorganisms. This has sparked excitement in the scientific community as one of the strongest possible signals of extraterrestrial life.

However, scientists are being cautious and stress that more research is needed to definitively confirm the presence of these molecules.

According to experts, if there is life on K2-18b, it is likely to be very simple, similar to the microbial forms that existed on Earth billions of years ago. Moreover, since the planet orbits a red dwarf star, the creatures may have eyes that are more sensitive to light.
