Russian President Vladimir Putin's FSB secret security has reportedly arrested Russian-American ballerina Ksenia Karelina on high treason charges after the release of footage of her being escorted to a courthouse in handcuffs.

It is not clear when the video of 32-year-old Karelina was recorded, but Western media say that the arrest was made at the beginning of the year outside a theater in Yekaterinburg.

Karelina is a resident of Los Angeles and became an American citizen in 2021. Her social networks are filled with photos of life in the USA, where she is married to a native not publicly identified.

Yekaterinburg is the largest city in the Urals region, while Karelina's arrest comes after she took part in a fundraising page for the Ukrainian military, where she is accused of transferring $51.80 to the Ukrainian charity Razom.

Treason charges carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. In Russia since 2023, 63 people have received such charges and 37 have been found guilty, reports the Daily Mail.

Karelina says on her website that she is from Yekaterinburg and that she studied ballet at the SP Diaghilev School.

Kapor is now accused of collecting funds for the Ukrainian army since 2022.

The Russian network Mediazona says that Karelina was initially arrested on charges of "hooliganism" for dirty language but then the charges were escalated to "high treason".

Razom, the Ukrainian charity she is accused of supporting, contributes funds for social issues in Ukraine as well as support equipment for the military.

Karelina is not the only American arrested in Russia, where former soldiers Paul Whelan and David Barnes, convicted of child abuse, were previously detained.
