A "mum" has been jailed after she faked 17 pregnancies over 24 years so she could pocket almost €111,000 from her maternity leave.

Barbara Ioel e, 50, falsely claimed to have had five children and 12 miscarriages while putting pillows on her stomach to create the impression she was pregnant.

Ioele, from Rome, also faked her walk to appear to be carrying a child and took significant time off work.

The woman denies all allegations and continues to claim that her five children exist and that all her pregnancies, including her miscarriages, were real.

Ioele claimed she had given birth to her last child in December, but cops said she had been under surveillance for the previous nine months and that the entire pregnancy was a hoax.

Prosecutors accuse the woman of committing the alleged fraud by stealing birth certificates from a clinic in Rome and other forged documents, Italian newspaper Il Mattino reports. She is said to have been doing this since 2000, Oddity Central added, and as a result managed to earn a sum of €111,000.

Davide Pizzinato, Ioele's 55-year-old partner, reportedly told police during questioning that he knew "full well" that she was never pregnant. He is believed to have testified against her in exchange for a lesser sentence, despite being accused of being her partner in the fraud. "She made the [fake] certificates and brought them [to ASL]," she reportedly told investigators.

"This is what I have known since 2012, that is, since our relationship began." Ioele was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

Her lawyer reportedly showed two certificates, not of maternity, which proved her precarious state of health. It comes after a woman was accused of faking a pregnancy to get time off work.

The alarm was first raised when a co-worker claims they noticed Robin Folsom's "little bump" drop. The 43-year-old had told bosses at US firm Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) that she was expecting and arrangements had been made for her to take maternity leave from the £74,000-a-year marketing role.

But a colleague said they noticed Folsom's lump appeared to be protruding from her stomach, raising suspicions.

The woman is also said to have "invented" a fake father for the suspected baby, a man named Bran Otmembebwe.

And after the "birth," Folsom sent photos of the newborn to her colleagues, but they appeared to be several different babies, her colleagues said.

Folsom also said she already had another child that she gave birth to in July 2020, but investigators could find no evidence or medical records to prove that.
