The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed on Friday that Russian troops were stealing grain reserves, at a time when fierce fighting continues in the eastern and southern regions of the country.

"The Russian occupiers are robbing the villagers," said the General Staff. "Thus, for example, over 60 tons of wheat together with trucks were stolen from the agricultural cooperative in the town of Kamianka-Dniprovska.

Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of the southern city of Melitopol, who has been held by Russian troops for weeks, also spoke about the removal of grain reserves.

"Today it has moved to an industrial scale," he said. "Yesterday we published a video of a convoy of over 50 cars with trailers that were pulling grain from our occupied territories… And today we do not know where they sent it," the official concluded.

The area around Melitopol produces considerable cereal crops.

Ukraine is known as the "Europe's bread basket" and is a major source of wheat and corn - especially for import-dependent countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The possible wholesale interruption of its harvest this year could be a disaster, leaving these countries in short supply and raising prices for important agricultural commodities.
