US President Donald Trump welcomed his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House on Thursday, where the two leaders are holding talks.

The US president began by saying it was a "pleasure" to host his Turkish counterpart. He added that they would discuss trade and military aircraft, noting that they have had a very good relationship for a long time.

Trump further said he would like Erdogan to stop buying oil from Russia, noting that the war has cost “millions of lives.” “And for what? Disgraceful,” Trump said. He added that “it’s unfortunate” what Russia is doing and that Putin “has to stop.”

Asked how Erdogan could help bring Putin and Zelensky to the negotiating table, the US president said the Turkish leader is "very respected by both of them" and could have "great influence" if he wanted to, even though he is currently "very neutral."

The best thing he can do, according to Trump, is not to buy oil and gas from Russia.

"He knows Putin as well as I do," Trump added, repeating his usual claim that he has solved several wars, but that he "thought this would be one of the easiest to solve."

Trump also added that he and Erdogan will hold discussions and "make some great trade deals for both countries."

Erdogan, for his part, said he was "very pleased" to be in the White House and that he was happy that his visit coincided with the 80th UN General Assembly, which he and Trump attended earlier in the week.

Speaking in Turkish, Erdogan said he and Trump could “take Turkey-US relations to another level.” He added that the two leaders have the opportunity to discuss the F-35 and F-16 fighter jets during the meeting.

"The US could lift sanctions on Turkey almost immediately"

"Sanctions on Turkey? It could happen very soon. If we have a good meeting, almost immediately," President Trump said, when asked by a reporter about lifting sanctions on Turkey.

He imposed sanctions on Turkey in 2020 over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system. Lifting them could pave the way for Ankara to buy Lockheed Martin's advanced F-35 fighter jets, for which it was both a buyer and manufacturer until it was excluded over the S-400, as well as other military equipment.

"We will discuss the Patriot system, which is the best system," Trump said.

"The Gaza ceasefire agreement is close, but I need to meet with Israel"

Trump spoke about a meeting he had with Middle Eastern leaders on the eve of the UN General Assembly.

"I had a great meeting with the leaders of that area, of that region. In general, the Middle East. I had a great meeting a few days ago at the UN, as you know, and I think we are close to reaching some kind of agreement," he said.

However, he stressed that he must meet with Israel.

"I have to meet with Israel, and I have to do this too. They know what I want, and we think, I think we can make it happen. I hope we can make it happen. A lot of people are dying, but we want to get the hostages back."
