Iran's strategy to force the US to make concessions

Iran is pursuing a new strategy to increase pressure on the United States, using trade routes, maritime corridors and energy infrastructure as leverage, Gulf officials and analysts reported, citing Reuters.

According to them, Tehran is not aiming for an outright military victory, but is trying to gradually expand the crisis without leading it to a full-scale war. The goal is to convince the US and its allies that confronting Iran will have a higher cost than accepting its demands, especially over Iran's role in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Reuters, Iran has signaled that the danger is not limited to the Strait of Hormuz. Threats to the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure show that Tehran is ready to exert pressure in other areas important to global trade and energy supplies.

Michael Knights, an analyst at the Washington Institute, told Reuters that Iran is constantly expanding ways to escalate the crisis.

"From the beginning, Iran has tried to outdo the US by constantly expanding its options for escalation. Every week brings something new – a new area, a new weapon, or a new target."

He added that Iran's main advantage is not direct damage to the US or Israel, but the impact it can have on countries in the region and the global economy.

Gulf sources told Reuters that Revolutionary Guard leaders believe they can gain more by increasing pressure. Tehran, they said, is counting on US President Donald Trump not to get involved in a major new conflict in the Middle East ahead of the US midterm elections.

Meanwhile, Trump said talks with Iran would begin on Monday after calling off a planned attack in the hope of reaching a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iranian authorities have denied that they are currently holding negotiations with the United States.

According to a senior Iranian source, the country's leadership believes that any concessions made previously have only brought more pressure from Washington. For this reason, Tehran believes that it must strengthen its positions before entering into serious negotiations.
