Stoltenberg in Pristina: Stability in the region matters for our security
Shefi in NATO, Jens Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the increased military presence in Kosovo by 1,000 troops — the largest deployment in the alliance's last years — shows how seriously the alliance takes the violence that erupted in recent months in Kosovo.

At a press conference with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, Stoltenberg was asked if there has been Russian influence in recent weeks regarding incidents in the north and if NATO is concerned that similar incidents could cause a wider conflict, Stoltenberg said NATO has invested a lot in peace and stability in Kosovo and the region since the 1990s.

"We are really investing in the security of this region, because the security of the people in this region, the stability in this region, is important for our security," he said.

He added that NATO will implement the mandate of its mission in Kosovo, KFOR, to provide environment and movement for all communities. The NATO chief said the alliance is conducting a review of its military presence in the Western Balkans "which includes Bosnia and Herzegovina and also Kosovo."

Speaking about the attack on Kosovo Police on September 24 in Banjska, Zvecan by a group of armed Serbs, Stoltenberg said those responsible for the attack must face justice.

He said he will also convey this message during the meetings that will take hold on November 21 in Belgrade.

"In September we saw a serious outbreak of violence in northern Kosovo, which raised concerns that a wider conflict could return to the Western Balkans. In May, our KFOR troops were attacked, with 93 soldiers injured, some seriously, some with lifelong wounds," Stoltenberg said.

"Such violent attacks are unacceptable. Those responsible must face justice," the NATO chief added.

For the attack in Banjska, Kosovo blamed Serbia. But Belgrade has denied it has a finger in it.

The attack was claimed by Milan Radoicic, former deputy head of Lista Srpska, the main Serb party in Kosovo that enjoys Belgrade's support.

Stoltenberg also welcomed the new draft statute establishing the Association of Serb-majority municipalities.

The establishment of the Association "would be a key step towards normalization of relations and towards lasting peace in the region," Stoltenberg said.

Asked about the possibility of Kosovo becoming part of the Partnership for Peace Programme, Stoltenberg said that unanimous decision of all alliance members is required.

Before Kosovo, Stoltenberg stayed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he met with state leaders and international high representative Christian Schmidt. In Sarajevo, the NATO chief said the alliance is concerned with the rhetoric of division and Russian influence in the region.

The NATO chief ordered everyone to be appointed for security and stability in the Western Balkans region.

He added that the allies "strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina."
