Rosalynn Carter, the wife of President Jimmy Carter, has died at the age of 96.

As first lady, she worked tirelessly on behalf of mental health reform and professionalized the role of president's spouse. Carter passed away peacefully with her family at her home in Plains, Georgia, the center said in a statement.

"Rosalynn was my equal partner in all I have ever achieved," her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, said in a statement. "She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. "As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew someone loved me and supported me," the Carter Center said.

The Carter Center announced Friday that the former first lady had entered intensive care.
President Jimmy Carter went into intensive care in February 2023 after a series of hospital stays. He is 99 years old.
