The record for the world's most expensive whisky bottle has been broken after a 1926 Macallan bottle went for £2.1 million at a Sotheby's auction in London.
The sale set a new record for every bottle of spirits or wine sold at auction, the auction house told AFP news agency.
The rare bottle was expected to raise between 750,000 and 1.2 million pounds, but exceeded estimates to reach 2 million and 187,500 pounds on Saturday.
One of the 1926 Macallan bottles had set a previous record for the most expensive bottle ever sold in 2019, when it reached 1.5 million pounds at Sotheby's.
Sotheby's whisky boss, Jonny Fowle, told AFP he had been allowed to test the valuable dram before the sale.
Fowle said: "I've enjoyed a little point - a small drop - of this. It's very rich, it has a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, lots of spices, lots of wood."
He added that he had spent 60 years in dark European oak, which reflected in colour. "It's not a whiskey to be taken lightly. It's a rich, rich drama, but it's incredible," Fowle said.
Adam 1926 is the oldest Macallan whiskey ever produced.
The bottles are among only 40, which Macallan, based in Moray, northern Scotland, has confirmed are bottled by Cask 263 in 1986.
However, these were not made available for purchase and were instead offered to Macallan's core customers.
Records are broken whenever one appears at auction: between 2018 and 2019, the record was broken three times by three different variations: Sir Peter Blake, Michael Dillon and Fine and Rare.
The record-breaking bottle is one of 12 Macallan 1926 bottles, which in 1993 had their own labels designed by Italian painter Valerio Adami.
