Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will meet today in Sochi where they are expected to focus on the Black Sea grain export agreement, amid Ankara's efforts to bring Moscow back to the agreement.

Erdogan's first face-to-face meeting with Putin since October comes as Russian forces try to thwart a new offensive in Kiev that is beginning to bear fruit after three months of brutal fighting along Ukraine's southern front.

The Turkish leader hopes to use the meeting as a basis for peace negotiations that some Western officials are discussing. Erdogan has been one of the few leaders within the NATO defense alliance who has maintained an open approach to Putin.

The two leaders have had a close relationship, but one that appears to have strengthened since Russia launched its "special military operation" in February 2022.

Putin's decision to help Turkey import Russian gas helped ease an economic crisis that nearly prevented Erdogan from winning re-election in May.

Turkey retaliated by refusing to join Western sanctions against Moscow. But Erdogan has also irritated Putin by supplying Ukraine with weapons and supporting its ambitions to join NATO.

The Kremlin was particularly angered when Erdogan in July allowed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to return five commanders that Russia sent to Turkey in a major prisoner swap.

The commanders were to remain in Turkey and the Kremlin warned that it would "take this into account in future agreements" with Erdogan.

However, both Moscow and Kiev are now seeking Erdogan's support for the grain deal.
