Sweden's Migration Minister Johan Forssell has said he will not resign, following reports that his 16-year-old son has been involved in far-right extremist groups, including the neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement.

The news was made public by the Swedish anti-racism organization Expo, which identified a "close relative" of a minister as a person active in the far right, who was later confirmed by Forssell himself as his son.

Forssell told TV4 that he was unaware of his son's activities until he was contacted by the Swedish Security Service a few weeks ago.

He stressed that he had followed all due procedures and decided not to make the matter public to protect the privacy of a minor.

"Perhaps many parents can relate to the fact that they don't fully know what their children are doing on social media," he said.

According to Expo, Forssell's son has collaborated with a member of NMR and has been involved in two other extremist groups, recruiting young people for one of them.

Security expert Magnus Ranstorp warned that extremist groups have become more sophisticated in recruiting young people, using social media and even physical appearance as a means of attraction.

Forssell stressed that his son has repented and has cut off all contact with the groups. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed his confidence in the minister, calling his reaction "responsible."

However, the left-wing opposition has promised to summon Forssell to parliament to give explanations in the fall, accusing the government of double standards towards extremism.
