US President Donald Trump appears willing to send weapons to Ukraine by selling them first to NATO allies.

The Guardian writes that this move comes amid tensions with Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the blockage of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

During an interview with NBC News, Trump said there would probably be a "major announcement" on Russia on Monday as he confirmed he had reached a deal with NATO leaders to supply weapons to Ukraine.

" I think I'll have a major statement to make on Russia on Monday. I'm disappointed with Russia, but we'll see what happens over the next two weeks ," Trump said.

Trump's envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is scheduled to arrive in Kiev on the same day for a week-long trip that comes after the US temporarily halted arms shipments to Ukraine as part of a Pentagon review of dwindling stockpiles of key munitions, including Patriot air defense missiles.

The White House has now tried to distance itself from the decision, and Trump has suggested he is ready to greenlight a major military aid package for Ukraine through NATO, reversing a previous policy of reducing support for the Ukrainian government to force Kiev to seek peace.

During the interview, Trump presented a plan under which the US could sell weapons to NATO and then they could be sent to Ukraine.

We emphasize that Trump has not previously approved military aid packages for Ukraine.

" So what we're doing is the weapons that are coming out are going to NATO, and then NATO is going to give these weapons [to Ukraine], and NATO is paying for these weapons ," Trump said.

Administration officials have said this would be different from directly supplying Ukraine from the US, as NATO, not Washington, would make the decision to arm Kiev.
