The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN expert on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories. Albanese is known for her strong criticism of the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measure against Albanese was related to her support for the International Criminal Court (ICC), an institution against which the US has shown hostile attitudes, having previously sanctioned its judges. Rubio accused the rapporteur of having directly collaborated with the ICC on investigations involving American and Israeli citizens, calling her unfit for the position she holds at the UN.

The sanctions imposed on her will include a ban on entry to the US and a freeze on any assets she may own in the US. The move represents a further escalation of the Trump administration's campaign against the ICC, following the court's decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza, charges that Israeli officials have denied.

Rubio also accused Ms. Albanese of "open anti-Semitism," support for terrorism, and "contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West as a whole."

This decision is expected to provoke strong reactions from those demanding accountability for the large number of civilian casualties as a result of the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

Ms. Albanese, who has been a consistent critic of Western governments' stances on the situation in the Palestinian territories, has gained widespread support from groups and individuals who accuse Israel and the US of using accusations of anti-Semitism as a way to silence criticism of their policies.

In an interview with the BBC in October last year, she rejected similar accusations, saying: "I do not take lightly these attacks and slanders that are directed at me, but I know that it is not about me as my predecessors also knew. I also know that the states that accuse me have done nothing to respect international law."

Her office was contacted for comment on the sanctions. The Israeli offensive in Gaza began after Hamas' armed attack on October 7, 2023, in southern Israel, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were kidnapped.

According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 57,575 people have been killed since that day, most of them women and children. Most of the population in Gaza has been displaced several times, over 90% of homes have been destroyed or damaged, and healthcare, water and sanitation systems are in a state of collapse. Acute shortages of food, fuel and medicine continue to worsen.
