US President Donald Trump said he is considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, following disagreements with allies over the war with Iran.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Trump said a possible US exit from the alliance is now "beyond any reconsideration."

"Oh yeah, I would say it's beyond any reconsideration. I was never influenced by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that, and so do I, by the way," Trump said after being asked if he would reconsider US membership in NATO following the conflict in the Middle East.

The comments come after NATO members refused to join US efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route that has been cut off during the conflict.

About 20 percent of the world's oil typically passes through the strait, and its closure has contributed to rising global energy prices and concerns about a wider economic impact.

NATO allies have been cautious about getting directly involved in military operations related to the conflict with Iran, particularly in efforts to secure sea lanes in the Persian Gulf.

The alliance has not announced any joint military action related to the reopening of the strait.
