Albanian sentenced in US for fighting against US troops with ISIS

A 49-year-old Kosovo man, who also holds US citizenship, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a federal court in the United States for participating in the terrorist organization ISIS. Lirim Sylejmani, also known as Abu Sulayman al-Kosovi, was found guilty of receiving military training from a declared terrorist organization.

The decision against him was announced on June 2, 2025 by federal judge Rudolph Contreras in the District Court in Washington, and after the end of his sentence, Sylejmani will remain under lifelong supervision.

The news was announced by the US Department of Justice, through a joint statement by Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the head of the Homeland Security Division, Sue Bai, and FBI representatives engaged in the field of counterterrorism.

"Sulejmani will spend a decade in prison reflecting on the betrayal he committed against this country. Anyone who thinks ISIS is the answer should think again. We will stop any individual who threatens the security of our citizens," declared Prosecutor Pirro.

According to court documents, Sylejmani traveled to Syria in November 2015, along with his family, with the intention of joining the terrorist organization ISIS. He remained in areas controlled by the extremist group until early 2019.

During this period, Suleimani underwent 21 days of intensive military training, where he was trained with weapons such as AK-47s, M-16s, and hand grenades. After the training, he was assigned to a combat unit in Mosul, Iraq, and swore an oath of allegiance to then-ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

In May 2016, Suleimani took part in the Battle of Manbij against US-led coalition forces. He was wounded in the leg during the fighting and was later transferred to another ISIS unit, where he remained until the final fall of territory controlled by the group.

On February 27, 2019, Sulejmani and his family were captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces in the Baghouz area, the last ISIS stronghold. He was initially held in an SDF-controlled prison and then handed over to US authorities on September 15, 2020.
