Scientists warn of a major volcanic eruption: The world is not prepared

The massive eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai volcano in January in Tonga, in the South Pacific Ocean, was the largest since the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, according to a new study published in Nature. in 1991, and the largest explosion ever recorded by the instruments.

Research by volcanologists Michael Cassidy (University of Birmingham) and Lara Maní (University of Cambridge) calculates that there is a one in six chance of a major volcanic eruption this century, and they warn that "the world is not prepared" for it.

That mega-explosion could drastically change the world's climate and lead to the collapse of civilization. In the past, eruptions of this magnitude have caused sudden climate changes, collapsed civilizations, and been associated with increased pandemics.

As for how it would affect our daily lives, "the impacts will be felt across transport, food, water, trade, energy, finance and communication in our globally connected world".

In 2021, researchers looked at ice cores from both poles and identified 1,113 signs of explosions in Greenland ice and 737 in Antarctica that occurred between 60,000 and 9,000 years ago. They found 97 events likely to have a climate impact equal to a magnitude 7 or greater eruption. They concluded that magnitude 7 events occur about once every 625 years, and magnitude 8 events (also called superbursts) about once every 14,300 years.

Today, a supervolcano eruption "could cause 60% more cooling" in temperatures. The planet is more populated than in 1815 and much more connected, so a volcanic mega-eruption would kill many more people and paralyze trade routes. For this reason, the economic crisis would be certain.
