European Union technology regulators have fined the well-known Chinese online sales platform, Temu, 200 million euros.
According to European officials, this decision comes after the company has not done enough to stop the sale of illegal products on its platform.
This is the result of the first phase of a wide-ranging investigation lasting almost two years, carried out under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This tough EU law requires big tech companies to take concrete measures to combat illegal and harmful content.
The European Commission launched the investigation following complaints from the pan-European consumer organization BEUC and its 17 national members.
According to the Commission, Temu failed to identify and assess the systemic risks that illegal products pose to consumers in the EU. The platform was also criticized for increasing the risk of the sale of these goods through its product recommendation systems and advertising through influencers.
Temu spoke out against this decision. “We disagree with the European Commission’s decision and consider the fine disproportionate,” the company stated, adding that this decision is based on assessments from 2024 and does not reflect the improvements made to their security systems since then.
