"Bloody" rain in Great Britain

Scientists are warning that the United Kingdom could experience an unusual meteorological phenomenon, dubbed “blood rain.” The phenomenon will occur during the day on Tuesday, as a large cloud of red dust from the Sahara Desert is moving north over Europe and towards the United Kingdom.

When Saharan dust particles enter the atmosphere, they will mix with rain falling on the country. The precipitation could take on a reddish hue, creating a dramatic sight in the sky, experts said.

Scientists from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) say the red dust is expected to pass mainly over southern England. The phenomenon is expected to last for about two hours.

Although the term “blood rain” sounds alarming, experts stress that the phenomenon poses no risk to human health and is not expected to affect air quality. The most visible aspect of the phenomenon is expected to be a thin layer of dust left on vehicles and exposed surfaces after the rain stops.
