CNN has shed light on the operation of the much-wanted leader of one of the most dangerous drug cartels, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes , known as ' El Mencho '.
After years of pursuing him, on February 20, Mexican forces received concrete information about the whereabouts of the feared leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel .
Their investigation into Oseguera's network had led them to a key person who could help gain access to his hideout, a " confidant " of one of his girlfriends, according to Mexican Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo .
The next day, the girlfriend left Oseguera's cabin complex on the outskirts of Tapalpa, but the drug lord remained at the hideout with his security team.
Mexican special forces and the National Guard's Special Rapid Reaction Force then swung into action, devising a plan and launching a raid within the next 24 hours.
To avoid raising suspicion, the mission was carried out primarily by ground forces with limited air support from helicopters.
According to CNN's analysis of social media videos, several Mexican army units were present in the center of Tapalpa on Sunday morning.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the US shared intelligence that helped the operation, but did not send ground forces.
Mexican troops set up a perimeter around the compound and then closed in. As they did so, they were shot by Oseguera's deputies.
Using witness video captured during the operation, CNN identified El Mencho's possible location in a wooded area that houses several small, gated compounds, just over three miles southwest of Tapalpa. The location, a vacation rental facility known as Cabañas La Loma, is located near the Tapalpa Country Club, at the end of a long, secluded road.
Cabañas La Loma was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department in 2015 and again in 2017 for providing “material support to the drug trafficking activities of the (Jalisco Cartel).”
Footage verified by CNN shows uniformed personnel and armored vehicles advancing up a slope toward Cabañas La Loma.
Witness footage, initially geolocated by online researcher Halipon and verified by CNN, shows dozens of uniformed people and armored vehicles moving toward the site.
In other footage, filmed below on the entrance road, automatic gunfire can be heard, while a third video recorded at the same time shows thick black smoke rising from the area.
During the exchange of fire, 8 cartel members were killed and 2 soldiers were injured.
Oseguera and some of his deputies then fled to a nearby forest area, leaving behind a group "with a large amount of weapons" that continued to fight.
While some of the Mexican troops remained to confront the group in the cabin, a team of Special Forces broke away in pursuit of Oseguera, whom they found hiding in an area of dense forest vegetation.
After another gunfight, the Special Forces team arrested the cartel leader and his two bodyguards. All three were seriously injured and it was determined that they needed to be evacuated to survive.
Along with a wounded soldier, the three cartel members were placed on a helicopter that was supposed to take them to a hospital in the nearby city of Guadalajara.
However, when the three died during the flight, authorities decided to change the destination, fearing a violent reaction in Guadalajara, where the cartel has a large influence. The helicopter was diverted to Morelia International Airport, where an Air Force plane was waiting to take them to Mexico City.
News of Oseguera's death plunged much of Mexico into chaos, as cartel forces embarked on a wave of retaliatory violence.
The gangs set up fiery barricades in the streets and engaged in clashes with the army.
Airlines suspended flights to the region and the US urged its citizens to shelter in place during the unrest.
Amid the chaos, 25 National Guard military police officers were killed.
The operation came at a crucial time for Mexico. With Trump threatening cross-border intervention, Sheinbaum was clearly keen to show that he was cracking down on drug gangs.
However, it also represents a calculated risk, given the proximity of the World Cup to the violence sparked by the death of the drug lord. Guadalajara will host matches this summer, in an event expected to bring economic benefits to Jalisco, and Sheinbaum would undoubtedly be careful not to scare away tourists.
It is possible that the opportunity to capture Oseguera, who the US has classified as a global terrorist with special affiliation and a reward of 15 million dollars, was not lost. / CNN
