Roof collapses at nightclub in Dominican Republic

At least 98 people have died and more than 160 were injured after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic's capital, Santo Domingo.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday during a concert by the famous singer Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set nightclub. In addition to the singer, the victims include former North American baseball champion Octavio Dotel, who died while being transported to the hospital, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province, President Luis Abinader said.

According to local media, there were between 500 and 1,000 people in the nightclub, La Repubblica wrote.

The director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, said there was hope that many of those trapped under the rubble of the collapsed roof were still alive. However, the possibility of the death toll rising is high.

Jet Set is a popular nightclub that regularly hosts dance music concerts on Monday nights. Politicians, athletes and other prominent figures have been in attendance.

This is not the first case to occur in nightclubs. We recall that at the beginning of last month at least 60 people died and more than 155 people were injured in North Macedonia as a result of flames that engulfed a nightclub in Kocani.
