The United States imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Friday, citing illegal drugs in a post on the Treasury Department's website.

US President Donald Trump threatened over the weekend to increase tariffs on Colombia and said on Wednesday that all funding for the country had been cut off.

"Since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has exploded to the highest level in decades, flooding the United States and poisoning Americans," said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

"President Petro has allowed drug cartels to flourish and has refused to stop this activity. Today, President Trump is taking strong action to protect our nation and make it clear that we will not tolerate drug trafficking in our nation," he said.

Today's action was taken pursuant to Executive Order (EO) 14059, which targets foreign persons involved in the global illicit drug trade.

Colombia remains the world's largest producer and exporter of cocaine. Cocaine from Colombia is often purchased by Mexican cartels, who then smuggle it into the United States across the southern border. It is a scheduled substance that poses a significant drug threat to the United States, despite Gustavo Petro's recent comparison of the drug's use to whiskey.

"Gustavo Petro is a former guerrilla who was elected to the Colombian presidency in 2022. He has provided benefits to narco-terrorist organizations under the auspices of his "total peace" plan, among other policies, which have led to record levels of coca cultivation and cocaine production. On September 15, 2025, due to the actions of Gustavo Petro and his friends, the President determined that Colombia is a major drug transit country or a major illicit drug producing country and that it is "manifestly failing" to fulfill its drug control responsibilities.

Gustavo Petro's erratic behavior has further alienated Colombia from its partners in other ways. In 2024, he shared confidential information obtained through secure anti-money laundering communication channels, threatening the integrity of the international financial system and leading to the suspension of Colombia's Financial Intelligence Unit by the Egmont Group. He has also aligned himself with the narco-terrorist regime of Nicolas Maduro Moros and the Cartel de Los Soles.

Gustavo Petro is being designated today pursuant to EO 14059 for engaging in or attempting to engage in activities or transactions that have materially contributed to the international spread of illicit drugs or their means of production," the U.S. Treasury Department announced.
