Dozens of AfD interpellations about military trains and transports. Strong accusation: They are spying for Putin

MP Ringo Muhlmann's interest in everything to do with drones, railways and military transport was obsessive and his demands on the regional parliament were constant.

But what prompted the AfD's internal affairs spokesman in Thuringia, the bastion of the far-right and the political stronghold of its most radical leader, Bjorn Hocke, to gather such a wealth of logistical-military details?

The state's interior minister, the Social Democrat Georg Maier, has little doubt: "We must assume that the AfD acts as an extension and servant of Putin." This data would do nothing but fuel hybrid warfare.

An investigation by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper has revealed the extent of the phenomenon, which is not limited to Thuringia, but is also visible in other eastern German states, and even to a lesser extent in the national Bundestag.

Of course, Thuringia, located on a strategic corridor to the East and Ukraine, is a critical crossing point for military transports.

Minister Maier has turned this issue into a personal battle: "The frequency of AfD interpellations dealing with sensitive security topics is more than suspicious; it cannot be explained by the normal need of parliamentarians for information."

According to him, the AfD is also endangering Germany's national security. Without a doubt, it has touched a sensitive nerve.

Reactions from the party were not long in coming.

"These are absurd suspicions," said Bernd Baumann, the AfD's number two in the federal parliament.

While Hocke attacked Minister Maier, calling him "a political failure."

However, Muhlmann has continued to "dig" persistently: 47 interpellations this year alone.

For example, interpellation no. 8/1419, submitted on September 18, asks to know which military transports have passed through Thuringia since 2022, broken down by year, “type of transport (road/rail), number of known crossings and stops.”

In July, he submitted three requests in a row, each with 10–12 sub-questions, such as: “Which active scenarios does the Thuringian police currently consider to be priorities for operational protection against drones?” Or: “Which systems have been tested, which have been evaluated, and what kind of fixed or mobile protection is envisaged in Thuringia?”

And so on.

It is not difficult to imagine that this material, once made public, would be carefully analyzed by Russian operatives.

For some time now, there has been discussion in German secret services about the fact that some AfD deputies at the national level, with ties to Russia or China, are using their right to interpellation to serve authoritarian regimes.

For example, the former AfD lead candidate for the European Parliament, Maximilian Krah, has been convicted of espionage: one of his assistants turned out to be an active agent in the service of Beijing.

It is known that parliaments, from regional ones to the European ones in Brussels, are gold mines for intelligence services: there are files, draft laws, sectoral studies that provide an "x-ray" of the enemy. And even more so when someone, voluntarily, opens the door or the files. / Corriere della Sera
