Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro pleaded Thursday against a "crazy war" as the US military presence grows ever closer to his country.

Maduro's comment came after US President Donald Trump said he had authorized covert action against the South American nation amid a military campaign targeting what Washington calls drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific.

"Yes, peace, yes, peace forever, peace forever. No crazy wars, please!" Maduro said in English at a meeting with unions affiliated with the leftist leader.

The United States has deployed stealth fighter jets and naval vessels as part of what it calls a counternarcotics effort.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump again denied sending B-1B bombers to Venezuela, but said "we're not happy with them. They've emptied their prisons in our country."

Trump said "we will not necessarily seek a declaration of war" from Congress, which has the constitutional power to do so.

"We're just going to kill people who come to our country."

The US airstrikes, which began on September 2, have killed at least 37 people, according to an AFP estimate based on US figures.
