USA/ For the first time in almost 150 years, the House of Representatives

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted Tuesday to impeach Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, holding him responsible for lax policies that have fueled illegal immigration.

Through a 214-213 vote, the House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas, for not implementing the legal framework on immigration, which according to Republicans has fueled the flow of immigrants to the US-Mexico border and for declaring lie before Congress.

President Joe Biden called the vote an unconstitutional act against a respected public servant for political reasons.

A record number of immigrants have illegally crossed the Mexico-US border.

Mr. Mayorkas has stated that he is not responsible for the situation at the border.

Constitutional experts and even some Republicans have stated that the investigation by the House of Representatives against Mr. Mayorkas failed to prove the "crimes and abuse of office" that the US Constitution cites as grounds for impeachment.

This type of trial against a member of the government cabinet is rare and has hardly been practiced in 150 years.

In 1876, the House of Representatives impeached Secretary of Defense William Belknap regarding government contracts. He resigned before the vote.

After this Tuesday's vote in the House of Representatives, the charges will be sent to the Senate.

The Democrats have the upper hand in the Senate, they control 51 seats and the Republicans have 49.

It is unlikely that the Democrats will support Mr. Mayorkas' removal from office./VOA
