The US government has decided to classify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, which means that people who use or possess this substance are unlikely to end up in prison in the future.
"Too many lives have been destroyed because of our failed approach to marijuana," US President Joe Biden wrote on social media platform X.
"Today, the Department of Justice is taking the next step to reclassify marijuana from a 'Schedule I' drug to a 'Schedule III' drug under federal law," the president added.
In the United States, drugs are divided into five different categories. Until now, marijuana or cannabis belonged to the first category, ie the most serious, including heroin and LSD.
The American government has now requested that he be placed in the third category in the future. As a result, marijuana will be equal to steroids or paracetamol.
American media called the reclassification historic.
The reclassification recognizes the medical use of cannabis, but makes no provision for full national legalization for private consumption.
Although marijuana is now legal for recreational and medical purposes in more than 20 US states and for medical reasons alone in more than a dozen other states, federal law still lags behind.
