Russia is building a military base in Serbia? Military Expert: Favors Russian

A Russian military base is likely to be built in Serbia, according to Russian media outlet Lenta.ru, citing Russian military expert and historian Boris Yulin.

Yulin says the creation of such a base would help Russian intelligence. This base is supposed to deal with reconnaissance and territory monitoring, according to the military expert.

" It is not very clear what benefits the creation of a military base in Serbia will bring ," said Yulin

"The fact is that the bases are located near areas of possible hostilities. Territorially, Serbia is completely separated from Russia and is surrounded on all sides by EU countries and partly by NATO countries", he added.

The ambassador of Russia in Belgrade, Aleksandar Bocan-Kharchenko, spoke about this, saying that " the creation of Russian military bases in Serbia is a sovereign matter of that country ", writes the Russian portal.

Harchento emphasized that there is a joint Russian-Serbian humanitarian center, which works for crisis response in the event of a humanitarian disaster.

The ambassador said that Serbia is a friendly country and that Belgrade  "fundamentally opposes anti-Russian sanctions ".

Although Serbia aims for EU membership, and has condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, it has not joined the Western world in imposing sanctions on Russia due to the close relations these two countries have.
