Russia said on Thursday that it does not make sense to attend the conference in Switzerland to discuss how to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Switzerland is expected to host talks on June 15-16 at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that over 100 countries will be invited to this meeting.
"The first country we talked to, after Ukraine of course, was Russia, as a peace process cannot happen without Russia, even if it will not be present for the first meeting," Mr. Cassis told reporters in the Swiss capital. Bern.
"We know that there is no point in having Russia at the table if we cannot be sure that they will act in good faith," said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba during an interview published in Foreign Policy magazine.
Mr. Kuleba said that increasing pressure on Russia on the battlefield and bringing together like-minded countries will help make Moscow more willing to engage in dialogue.
The conference in question is "practically the first real chance to start restoring a just peace", Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said during his speech on Thursday evening.
The Swiss government said on Thursday that Russia is not currently among the participants in the conference. It has said it is open to Russian involvement, but Moscow has repeatedly said it is not interested.
The attacks continue
Russia attacked Ukraine twice on Thursday. Russian rockets hit and injured at least eight children and one adult in the northeastern Kharkiv region, Ukrainian officials said. They added that in another attack, Russian rockets wounded 14 people at a post office in the southern city of Odesa.
Russia has denied targeting civilians during its attack on Ukraine, but it has repeatedly struck Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles for nearly two years.
Russian officials said there were Ukrainian drone strikes on Thursday in several regions.
Russia also on Thursday rejected US accusations that it has used banned chemical agents in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the accusations "groundless".
The United States accused Russia on Wednesday of violating the international treaty banning chemical agents by using the chemical agent chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces. /VOA
