A US priest has been arrested for theft after his church discovered "an astronomical amount of Apple transactions" allegedly used to make purchases on the popular smartphone game Candy Crush.

Microtransactions have been part of electronic games for years, as in the case of Counter Strike, Fifa or Fortnite. However, experts say they can be just as addictive as gambling, becoming dangerous especially for children.

51-year-old Reverend Lawrence Kozakai allegedly spent more than $40,000 of his Church's money on video games like Candy Crush and Mario Kart Tour.

The priest was arrested and charged by the Chester County District Attorney's office in Philadelphia with theft and related crimes over a three-year period.
