About 5 hours in Congress, TikTok CEO: The app is not an agent of Beijing
Shou Zi Chew

The CEO of the hugely popular platform "TikTok", Shou Zi Chew, testified yesterday for more than five hours before the committee of the US Congress, as the Republicans of the House of Representatives want to intensify the control of the Chinese application.

As reported by CNN, Shou Zi Chew spoke before the House Energy and Commerce Committee and it was the first time the platform's CEO appeared before a congressional committee.

Harvard-educated Chew, who once interned at Meta's Facebook for about two years, was the only witness at the hearing amid concerns about potential security and privacy risks.

The US fears that the Chinese regime has gained access to the data of American users, while some express concern that the app could be used for propaganda or to manipulate citizens.

“TikTok knowingly allowed the Chinese Communist Party to access US user data. American citizens have a right to know how these actions affect the privacy and security of their data,” Republican Rep. Kathy McMorris Rogers, who chairs the committee, said in a written statement.

In his speech, Shou Zi Chew emphasized that the platform is safe and should not be banned by the US authorities.

He also noted that 150 million people in the US are active users of the platform, which he said shows how popular TikTok is now as Washington tries to ban it.

For her part, the chairwoman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee reiterated that the platform "must be stopped" and the fact that there are 150 million American users on the platform shows that Congress must act urgently.

Shou Zi Chew was quick to exonerate Beijing, stressing that the Chinese government has never asked, nor does it intend to ask, any company to hand over users' personal data.

"We respect the privacy and personal data of everyone who uses the app. The government attaches great importance to data security," asserted the CEO of the popular platform. "TikTok is not an agent of China," Chew added.

Answering the question whether the "ByDance" company is Chinese, he emphasized that it is a global company with a Chinese founder.
