The video of French President Emmanuel Macron removing a luxury watch in front of the cameras during an interview in which his pension reform was being discussed is making the rounds of the French media and half the world, and the action is at the center of criticism.

France has been engulfed in protests this week following Macron's decision to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Representatives of the French president have stated that he removed the watch because it was making noise when it collided with the table. However, for critics, the clock shows that he is far from the "problems" of the citizens.

The incident occurred during an interview broadcast on "prime time" on Wednesday while Macron was arguing his reasons for raising the retirement age.

As he spoke, the president put his hands under the table and began to take apart the watch. As he continued to speak, Macron removed the watch and pushed it away from him. When he lifted his hands from the table again, the watch was no longer under his shirt sleeve.

His team insisted the removal of the watch was completely innocent. But this moment was used by the president's critics.

Clémence Guetté, an MP for the left-wing La France Insoumise party, wrote in a tweet: "While the president was claiming that minimum wage earners have unprecedented purchasing power, he was last seen removing his beautiful luxury watch."

The exact cost of the watch is debatable. Some suggest it could be worth €80,000, but other businesses say the real cost is €2,400.
