Kidnapping of former FBI agent, name of former Iranian ambassador to Albania

The FBI's Washington office released wanted posters Monday featuring three senior Iranian intelligence officers suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of retired FBI special agent Robert A. "Bob" Levinson from Kish Island in Iran on March 9, 2007.

The release of the posters is part of the FBI's ongoing investigation into Iranian officials who allegedly played a role in Bob's kidnapping and Iran's attempt to cover up responsibility, while one of the suspects is the former Iranian ambassador to Albania who was expelled from Albania in December 2018 for "harming national security."

Reza Amiri Moghadam, also known as Ahmad Amirinia, is the current Iranian ambassador to Pakistan.

He previously headed the operations unit of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). When he held this role, MOIS agents in Europe reported directly to him in Tehran.

Taghi Daneshvar, also known as Sayyed Taghi Ghaemi and Sayeed Taghi Gha'emi, is a senior MOIS officer involved in counterintelligence activities. He supervised the work of Sanai, also known as Mohammad Baseri, during the period when Bob disappeared.

Gholamhossein Mohammadnia is a senior deputy of the MOIS, who served as the Iranian ambassador to Albania in 2016. He was expelled from Albania in December 2018 for “harming national security.” Mohammadnia led an effort to blame Bobi’s disappearance on a terrorist group in the Baluchistan region of Pakistan, to deflect responsibility from the Iranian government.

“These three intelligence officers were among those suspected of facilitating Bob’s 2007 kidnapping and the subsequent cover-up of the event by the Iranian government. Bob likely later died in captivity, away from his family, friends and colleagues,” said Steven Jensen, assistant director of the FBI’s Washington Office. “The FBI will continue its relentless pursuit to hold anyone involved in his kidnapping accountable for their reprehensible actions.”

For nearly 18 years, the Iranian government has denied knowledge of Bobi's whereabouts, even though senior intelligence officials authorized his abduction and detention and launched a disinformation campaign to deflect blame from the Iranian regime.

In March 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Moghadam, Daneshvar, and Mohammadnia for their roles in the kidnapping of Bobi. This designation follows previous designations of MOIS officers Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai in December 2020.

According to the indictment, Moghadam, Daneshvar and Mohammadnia are suspected of playing a role in Levinson's kidnapping and detention. The US government wants to question them about their knowledge of the kidnapping and Iran's efforts to cover it up.

The FBI continues to offer a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Bob's location, recovery, and return.
