An indigenous case of malaria has been discovered in Verona, Italy. This was announced by the Directorate of Prevention of the Region, which has given instructions on this matter, activating the planned surveillance measures.

According to local authorities, the patient is a "person with no history of recent travel to countries where the disease is endemic".

For the specific case of Plasmodium vivax, an in-depth epidemiological investigation has been organized that includes; a field study for the capture and analysis of the local vector, health surveillance measures aimed at other subjects in the places of possible exposure and preventive disinfection activities in the area to be carried out based on the results of the controls carried out.

Malaria is not transmitted from person to person through direct contact, saliva or sexual intercourse, but exclusively through contact with infected blood or the bite of mosquitoes infected with a parasite (Plasmodium).

The disease is manifested by fever, intense chills, sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain. It is a treatable disease and can be effectively cured if diagnosed and treated promptly, thereby reducing the risk of serious complications.

The last cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria were observed in Sicily in the early 1960s. In Italy, malaria was officially eliminated in the 1970s thanks to rehabilitation campaigns and mosquito control, as well as the use of specific drugs.
